This directory has a heavy emphasis on organic/sustainable foodstuffs. I have made a sincere effort to include items that are not only produced here in San Diego, but that also contain ingredients that are grown here. When that is not the case, I have marked it with an asterick. Follow the link to find out more.

I live in LA and I've been looking for a local milk source as well. Did you look into Organic Pastures at all? http://www.organicpastures.com/
Anonymous - I haven't done much research on Organic Pastures past determining that they were up in Fresno, although I know their raw milk is available for purchase in L.A. Depending on how you define local (see my definition here: http://localtarian.blogspot.com/2007/09/comon-im-not-that-stupid-how-grocery.html), a Fresno dairy may work for you.
The only organic dairy I know of in the L.A. area is Rockview Farms, but I've chosen not to support them. You can read why here: http://localtarian.blogspot.com/2007/08/organic-milk-from-factory-farms-cause.html.

Thank you so much! This is a fantastic guide and was the inspiration for my "Sustainable Christmas Dinner" experiment. (http://genuinegenie.blogspot.com/2007/12/sustainable-christmas-dinner.html)
I'm so pleased you found it helpful! I hope you keep reading.
Just wanted to let you know that your input regarding CSAs inspired us to sign up for J.R Organics. Thanks and see you at HFM :)
I like your new template, and your list. Starlite is another good restaurant for local ingredients, and Waters Catering uses a lot of local/organic stuff too - they have even switched to biodegradeable disposables - hooray!
Thanks, Alice!
Andy - I hope your CSA experience with JR Organics has been a positive one! Perhaps we'll meet up at the Hillcrest Farmers Market one of these days!
Unfortunately I've heard that San Diego Soy Dairy gets their soybeans from the Midwest. Do you know if this is still the case?
Jess - Yes, you're right, the Soy Dairy sources their soybeans from the heart of soybean country: the midwest! But, as the eat local mantra goes, when you can't buy local, buy from a local business. I wanted to make sure people knew that even though they can't buy locally grown soymilk, they can still support a local business that processes them locally (a big part of the process) and contribute towards our local economy and community. I've marked items that meet this distinction with an asterisk. Thanks for commenting!
