Screening of "King Corn" on Apr 23

As much as I begged and pleaded, I could not convince the producers of the documentary "King Corn" to stage a screening in San Diego. Now O.B. People's Co-op is offering an opportunity on April 23 for all us San Diegans to find out what the rest of the country has been talking about.

King Corn is a feature documentary about two friends, one acre of corn, and the subsidized crop that drives our fast-food nation. In King Corn, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, best friends from college on the east coast, move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically engineered seeds, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America’s most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat . . . and how we farm.

Check out the King Corn blog and visit their website to watch the trailer.

When: Wednesday, April 23, 7:00 p.m.
Where: Ocean Beach Women's Club, 2160 Bacon Street, Ocean Beach, CA

mm sounds intriguing. I've never wondered where my food comes from. Guess it's about time for some education.

by the way, great job compiling the tremendous directory below! Quite a gargantuan task...

Caught this a few weeks ago at the library downtown. The two dudes are very endearing and tell a good story.

I left most impressed with their deft informational graphic skills.

Roger - this is definitely something that is going on my Localtarian's DVD Shelf (new list to come)! I hope that you're able to catch this screening.

Jed - I agree, these guys are something else! Just the kind of people I'd like to invite to a dinner party and let them loose. There'd sure to be some excellent conversation!

While it'll be great to see this at the OB Co-op, I thought I'd also point out, for those that can't make the public screening, that it will be shown on PBS' the Independent Lens on Sunday, April 20th at 11pm.

Thanks for keeping us all up to date on localtarian happenings!

Cheers,
Adam
