Did you know that you can tell whether produce is organic or genetically modified (GMO) simply by looking at the PLU (price look-up) code? I had remembered reading about this in Marion Nestle's "What to Eat" (review coming soon), but this post at Bon Appetit reminded me.
The PLU codes on produce contain four numbers normally. If the produce is organic, the code has five numbers, beginning with a 9. If it's GMO, the code has five numbers, starting with an 8.
This little trick is probably more useful for finding the GMO items, because organic produce is usually marked well (and priced to match).

Did you know that bees gather nectar from plants that are genetically modified, they loose their sense of orientation, can’t get back to their apiary and die... If however, they can avoid the GMOs, but come back to the apiary with contaminated pollen (by other contaminants), the “guards” kill them at the entry of the apiary ….
